The qualification consists of 5 mandatory units:

MR273 Contribute to Efficient and Effective Work Practices.
MR274 Contribute to Health, Safety, Welfare and the Environment.
MR275 Use and Maintain Tools and Power Tools.

Qualification is achieved by assessment to set industry standards and 'tests' are not generally set. Candidates are allowed two years to complete the assessment. This is achieved by Candidates compiling a portfolio of information to prove that they have the knowledge, understanding and skills to meet the industry standards.  They are guided through this process by an appointed qualified Assessor.

Assessment Methods

Assessment methods will usually take the form of

The collection of past and current evidence
Observation of onsite practical skills
Verbal questioning to confirm knowledge and understanding.

Procedure

Candidates need to apply via their employer, who is required to complete a Candidate Registration Form (CQS 001) and return it an Accredited Assessment Centre together with a cheque made out to the CITB.

Additional costs

Certification on achieving the Award is approximately £40. Assessment fees are dependant on location and the number of candidates from a single employer, but would be expected to be in the region of £850 per candidate.

Grants

Eligible employers can receive £450 in grants.  They do not need to pay the CITB levy to qualify, but if they do the grant is increased by 25%.
